experience in intercultural communication

My experience in intercultural communication can include my primary and high school years, as well as to this day. The fact that Australia is increasingly multicultural nation and I, born from another country, I move to Australia when I was 7yrs old. Coming from the Philippines, even though English is officially the second language , the literacy of English is integrated in schools but, it is rarely spoken by the common people, that’s why when I first started school in Bowen primary I totally did not understand anyone that  talked to me. It is how they speak, the slang that was used and probably the accent that boggled me.  The irony was I could write and read English at a higher level than anyone because where I went to school in the Philippines; we were force to do so at young age, as swell other things.  Looking back I can see how different Australia at the time, but when I learnt the history of Australia and even the history of other western nation, I quickly concluded that they weren’t so different to the present Philippines or at the time. I can relate to older generations when they talk about “back in my days we us to get smacked or whipped by teachers and forced manual labour such and such they were slave drivers blah blah you know.”.

In my early stage of learning the new language and culture, understanding the slang/informal, grammar and context was one big obstacle to overcome, but the thing is when I was taught English in the Philippines I only learn't how to write and read the text (formal language). Needless to say I did not learn the meaning or context of the words I assume that was for later stage. It is no different to when teaching any child the native language you teach it how to sound it out and how to decipher it, and then naturally they will practice it because it is the native language and eventually learn the context. So I had a lot to catch up. Many people don’t realize, English is the most difficult and complex language. When it comes to slang there is a variety of context within the English speaking nation. The best way I learn slang, whenever I hear a new slang, I don’t try to comprehend it right away instead I make a mental note for future reference, so when that slang is used again, then I try to find the common context and eventually I compile the meaning.
I cannot recall my transition from not understanding anything, to be able to proficiently communicate, I believe it was mainly the interaction and intercultural communication I had with the other kids which played a big role in my assimilation of the new culture. Like most young first generation people when exposed to a new culture, or dominant culture to that new environment. I naturally adapt, absorb the new culture making it my own. Not that I disregard my own culture, Sure In some cases by choosing to belong in something, the truth is you automatically don’t belong to another but that’s not in my case.

I quickly inherit my friend’s favourite football team and many other cultural driven things. My first teacher in Bowen was German and she wilfully taught us German, to this day I can still remember a few German phrases.

In my experience you have to apply yourself, in understanding new cultures and environments, for me I felt obligated to understand and learn the norms of the culture, as much as the people or the friends  whom felt obligated to teach or share them..

Communication Importance

Communication Importance in sharing critical information

Effective communication is significant for any Organization. It is the core to perform basic functions, failing to communication accordingly could result in a state of turmoil. In the article “Boston bombings: Concern over possible communication failures”. The article reports on how the Boston Bombing could may have been prevented, if a communication error hadn’t occurred (Roberts, 2013).

The FBI addresses the concerns that they did not thoroughly investigated a tip-off from Russian security services in 2011 about Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the older of the two suspects (Roberts, 2013). These may seem like a poor effort from the FBI part, but a former CIA and Pentagon official ‘Bruce Riedel defended them, “But he said that agencies received so many tipoffs that it was hard to process them all (Roberts, 2013)”. This does not justify the fact that the communication error was the failure to share the information to other agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security, which manages border control. The suspect wasn’t flagged and left the US in 2012(Roberts, 2013).By the time he returns all investigation had been closed (Roberts, 2013).

The failure to effectively communicate may be the result of the common barriers of communication obstacles which are, bypassing, and different frames of reference lack of language skill and the most likely for this case is distractions (Guffey, & Loewy, 2010, p1-5a ).There is a strong sense of distraction, “ how are you going to boil the 10,000 people you interview down to that one case, and how are you going to deal with the 500 false positives? (Roberts, 2013).”, The FBI could have been facing a great deal of information overload as well as a great deal of decision making could have delay the process.

Because of the above discussion, it is even more of shock to discover that FBI once again failed to communicate effectively and share critical information immediately to the local law enforcer of New York or NYPD, in this day of age knowledge workers are expected to use their brains in thinking critically (Guffey, & Loewy, 2010, p1-2c). There is no valid reason for the FBI to delay the message, in fact it is more damaging to do so.
“The FBI’s dereliction in failing to instantly notify Police Commissioner Ray Kelly that the Boston Marathon bombers planned to attack New York was irresponsible, unforgivable, terrifying and grounds for overhauling its anti-terror protocols.” (YANA, 2013).
Both the FBI and NYPD mission is exactly the same, which are to deal with criminal activity; both of their level of clearance in accessing information should be in par.

In the context of failing to communicate, given the nature of the FBI and that the methods of conducting investigations as well as all the protocols they have to follow. Because of the recent trend and persistence in the barrier between other agencies, it is important to take steps toward the direction of better co-operation with other law enforcing agency. This is especially when information and time is the key in beating the immediate threat.

5. Read the two short essays (first essay by John Doe, second essay by

Jane Citizen) below then blog your

Opinion/answer on:

Who wrote the better essay and why?

It is imperative to analyze on facts and evidence outside of your own opinions and thoughts. the majority of what you need to write will need to be  from  research, statistics, journal and textbooks.
John Doe's essay is a bit subjective, you can hear his personal feelings  towards airlines, although he did made some valid points, meaning some people can understand or relate to his experiences, but he  did not weigh or explore the possible attempts by the airlines, to resolve their issues. In contrast to Jane citizen's essay. Jane's essay is overall objective, this is portrayed through the way she describe the airline issues, and how the airlines are attempting to resolve their issues, as well as having a much more comprehensive sources or referencing information to fortify her points.

In comparing the structure of the two essays. John's introduction is broad and did not really specify the purpose or the topic, he is not as consistent through out his essay, this is shown by how he tend, to fail not complete the topic before going to another. Jane's essay in the other hand clearly highlights her topic in the introduction "This paper highlights one of the most important human aspect of its service: the rostering of flight attendants." , as well as using (to be expected in an essay) formal (compare to john's essay which is informal ) language through out her essay.

Jane's referencing strategy meets the standards of the 'APA6th edition style' of referencing, this is shown by how she applied the quotation marks when directly quoting relevant sources' facts or opinions, she also does a great deal, of crediting the source and its origin within the sentence, whenever she uses the factual information that she gathered in order to fortify her  key points. Although Jane and john provided referencing at the very end. John fail to  reference or quote his cousin with the the standard of 'APA6th edition style'
